Coronation Street's comedy classics

CLASSIC comedy in Corrie (ITV1) on Monday night, as the Barlows invaded Peter's AA meeting en masse.

The floor show included Blanche insulting two of the recovering alcoholics, then revealing that Ken had had an affair with an actress 'who lived on a tugboat'.

It wasn't long before the gathering knew that Deirdre was no angel and that Peter's sister was serving time for murder.

You can always rely on Chris Gascoigne, who plays Barlow junior, to deliver a line, and he had two scene stealers - 'Is it any wonder I turned to drink' and, as the rest of the clan exited the room, 'Whichever way you look at it, I'm screwed!'

While Gascoigne is one of the better actors in the soap, the jury is still out (after all this time) on Steve Arnold as Ashley Peacock with his Orville voice and two expressions - pained and silly.

As he stood at unconscious Claire's bedside in the hospital and said: "It's me, Ashley", a nation was probably thinking who else could it be with that voice?

Claire's suggestion that he should have a vasectomy seems a good idea to me - anything to get that squeak out of the gene pool.
