Jadran with hus guitar

A TALENTED young musician who was taught guitar by a music teacher from Cheadle Hulme will perform in the live finals of the BBC's Young Musician of the Year competition this weekend.

And the Swedish born teenager and former Hursthead Infant and Junior School pupil, Jadran Duncumb, will be following in the footsteps of the town's own Jennifer Pike - who also went to Hursthead and who herself won the competition in 2005 - when he goes for glory in this Saturday's competition.

Speaking about his former tutor, who still teaches locally, Jadran told Community News: "When I was eight I started having guitar lessons with my first guitar tutor, who was Peter Baldwin. He was from Cheadle Hulme and he helped me choose my first full size guitar, too," he said.

Jadran, who plays a number of instruments but will compete with his guitar, lived in Bramhall until the age of 10, after which he returned to his native Norway where he has since won the Norwegian National Youth Competition, not once, but twice.

Speaking about the prestigious BBC competition, he added: "I never really expected to get to the Grand Final when I entered the competition. I just wanted to see how far I could get - although obviously I hoped and still hope that I can go all the way."

On Saturday each of the five finalists will play their chosen concerto with the BBC National Orchestra of Wales and Principal Conductor Thierry Fischer, in front of the judging panel and live audience.

The competitors return to the stage on Sunday with BBC National Orchestra of Wales and Thierry Fischer. All five will reprise part of their concerto performance, chosen by the judges after the previous evening's concert. They will also perform a piece that is particularly personal to them.
