THE first phase of a proposed £182,000 project to refurbish a vandalised play area in Tytherington is set to begin.

The people behind the Tytherington Links Open Space Project (TLSOP) are aiming to update the 12-year-old facilities off Sandwich Way/Dorchester Way, which have fallen into disrepair and been subject to vandalism and graffiti.

Work on phase one, the toddler area, will start on Monday May 12. Funding has come from a mixture of sources including Macclesfield Borough Council, Waste Recycling Environment Limited (WREN) and the Tytherington Residents' Association.

Christine Cooke, chairman of the TLOSP, said: "We are hoping the work will be completed by Saturday June 28, so the official opening will coincide with a fete on that day organised by the Tytherington Family Worship.

"We currently have £10,500 already available for phase two, which includes the junior area, basketball and kickabout' area, but we need a further £110,000 to complete the project. We are applying to The Lottery funded Community Spaces and other funders.

"We are very grateful for the money we have received so far but there is still a lot of work to be done. We are in the process of delivering newsletters to all 1,320 homes on this estate. This will inform residents when the work will start, notify them of the fete, and ask for their help in fundraising."
