HEALTH care assistant Sue Coates has put on trainers for the first time in her life this year to take part in the Great Manchester Run.

The 59-year-old will tackle the 10 kilometre course on Sunday May 18 to raise funds for the breast care unit at the University Hospital, North Staffs, where 21-year-old Carli Stair is being treated for breast cancer.

Carli, the daughter of Sue's friend and hairdresser, Beverley, had just started a university course in forensic science when breast cancer was diagnosed.

"She's been brilliant," said Sue, who lives in St George's Street, Macclesfield, "and so brave. My sore feet are nothing compared to what she's been through."

Sue is out at 7am running round the park - "before the dog walkers get there" - and her goals will not end with the run on May 18.

"I always said that when I was 60 I would learn to drive and run a marathon," said Sue, "so in October I plan to take part in the Great North Run. Well, it's a half marathon.

"The staff at the breast care unit in Stoke have been great with Carli and the other women, so anything anyone can give to support them - whether it's 50p or £50 - will be much appreciated."

Cheques made payable to The Breast Care Unit may be sent to the Royal Bank of Scotland, 51 Park Green, Macclesfield, SK11 7NH.
