NEARLY 80 riders contested the Siddington Road Races on Tuesday evening last week.
The Wheelers were well represented on the 35-mile course with both youngest rider, in 14-year-old Ben Pickup, and the oldest, in 70-year-old Ralph Walker, as well as Jaime Hyde, Ant Allan, Adam Bailey and Graham Trevana.
The only success of the night came from Mike Cuming, who added to his growing reputation by escaping the bunch for a good half lap before being caught, escaping again and holding off a fast finishing group to win the first race.
Cuming was in action again the following evening in the latest round of the Wheelers' 10-mile time trial series, finishing second by just 14 seconds to Steve Burke, who recorded a time of 21.45. Andy Patterson took third place in 22.26, ahead of Graham Trevana, 22.27, and Roger Wrenn, 22.52. Simon Ward and Callum O'Connor rode as a team to record 22.43. Simon Galgut rode his first race of the year after his latest nasty fall in a very fast time of 24.13. Claire Logan was fastest of the ladies in 25.51, ahead of Sue Street and Claire Harbottle. This continued a run of good results which included third place in the Nelson Wheelers 10 in 24.33. Other riders were Kevin Walford, Alan Milburn, Warren Jackson, Dave Halsey, Nick Eldred, Ant Lear, Moray McNee, Jon Middleton, Alex Taylor and Hugh Mellier-Smith.
On Saturday, veterans Dave Higham and Roger Wrenn rode the South Pennine Road Club 25 on the A50 at Uttoxeter. Conditions were perfect and Higham took nearly two minutes off his personal best to record 53.45 and just get the better of Wrenn (54.18), who had celebrated his 64th birthday during the week. The event was won by Matt Bottrill in 49.04, the fastest time recorded this year.
