A MIXED pair of golfers from The Tytherington Golf Club took part in a Matchplay Championship final at the luxury five-star resort of Taba in Egypt.
Gary Cook and Kelly Morley were among 16 pairs of golfers from across the UK and Ireland who jetted off to Egypt to compete in the grand final of the Matchplay Championship, organised by The Golfers Club and sponsored by American Golf, Rewards4golf.com and Today's Golfer.
They took part in a 54-hole Stableford competition for the title of Mixed Matchplay Champions on the renowned championship course at the Marriot Taba Heights Beach Resort on the Red Sea Coast.
To reach the grand final, Cook and Morley beat off competition from more than 1,600 golfers from across the UK and Ireland after entering the tournament last July. But in the testing temperatures, eight-handicapper Cook and Morley, playing off a handicap of six, were unable to record another victory. They performed admirably, however, with scores of 40, 38 and 34, finishing third with a combined total of 112.
Cook said: "We have had a fantastic time. The course is in great condition, the resort beautiful and its location spectacular. Everyone who was lucky enough to make the trip out here is a winner.
"We are disappointed not to have won, but to be honest just to have made it here is a real achievement. We have had great fun and will definitely be taking part again next year."
The championship costs £20 per person to enter and golfers who want to enter the 2008/09 event can do so online by visiting www.matchplaychampionship.co.uk.
