Police have reported a significant crime drop in Heald Green, which they say is thanks to Operation Tonto.

Since January 1 reported incidents have decreased by nine per cent compared to the same period last year.

Theft from motor vehicle has dropped by 53 per cent, criminal damage by 50 per cent and reports of youths causing annoyance by 7.5 per cent.

Officers attribute the success to the targeted policing and a high visibility presence of the operation, with community support officers and police constables patrolling the streets in hotspot areas during peak times.

Inspector Dave Turner from the Stockport West Neighbourhood Policing Team said: "Crime causes a great deal of stress and inconvenience to residents and we are determined to drive down crime and ensure the area remains a pleasant place to live.

"We have achieved fantastic results so far and I would like to reassure the public that my officers will continue to target those responsible and bring them swiftly to justice as crime and anti-social behaviour in the area will simply not be tolerated."

Police are urging residents to report any neighbourhood issues they have to the Stockport West Neighbourhood Policing Team on 0161 856 9770.
