RESIDENTS are being warned to hold onto their black dustbins - as there is a shortage of the containers in Trafford.

And that means anyone who loses their bin could face a lengthy wait to get a replacement.

The 'bin famine' came to light after a Hale resident lost his last month.

At first he was told he would get a replacement within seven to 10 days - but later was stunned when the council told him they'd run out of the containers and he would have to cope until after they get replacements in mid-May.

The resident - who does not want to be named - said: "I have to put my rubbish in black bin liners until the middle of May.

"What is going on - how can the refuse department have run out of bins they need to hold the very waste they are supposed to collect?

"Has there been an unexpected high rise in the number of black bin disappearances?

"Is there a gang targeting black dustbins?

"Is Trafford working on a 'just in time' procurement policy in respect of black bins and the policy has failed to be just in time and become a 'just too late' policy?"

The council was unable to comment about the situation.
