Forty demonstrations in one chemistry lesson

A NEW chemistry lecture series is being delivered at King’s School, designed to stimulate the parts that normal lessons cannot reach.

Chemistry teachers Dr Jenny Pinkham and Jim Street, with King’s senior science technician Peter Jackson, have devised a lecture that features 40 chemical demonstrations.

They have already delivered the pyrotechnical procedures to 500 pupils at both the King’s Boys’ and Girls’ Divisions. Chemistry is already the most popular subject in the King’s School’s sixth form, bucking a long established national decline.

Jim Street said: “The aim is to show young scientists that chemistry is an exciting and challenging subject which has a major impact on British life.”

Dr Jenny Pinkham added: “Modern manufacturing demands an in-depth expertise in chemistry, and if this country is going to flourish, we need more young people with a thorough grounding in chemistry.”

Originally devised by Peter Jackson, the lecture features a range of carefully controlled whizzes, bangs and flashes.

The team’s next performance will be in December and they are looking to make their talk an annual event.
