POLICE are advising people in Handforth to fit timer switches in their homes to combat twilight burglars.

In the past month five burglaries have been reported, with jewellery and easy to carry electrical equipment such as laptop computers taken.

Detective Constable Dave Healey, from the Cheshire Police Eastern Area Pro Active Policing Unit said: "These burglaries are happening during the early evening, just as it goes dark. To a burglar, winter simply means extra working hours because darkness comes early. They also seem to have targeted houses which are in darkness, indicating that no-one is at home.

"Timer switches are a good deterrent. They give the impression someone is in, even when the occupier may still be at work. The switches are cheap to buy and easy to install.

"Obviously people should be careful about general security, too. Make sure doors and windows are shut and locked and if you have an alarm system don't forget to set it.

"We are also asking people in the area to stay alert and keep an eye open for anyone acting suspiciously. Burglars will spend a little bit of time sizing up houses before deciding which one to target.

"If you see any strangers hanging around call the Cheshire Police Information line on 0845 458 0000 and give the details. If the person or people have a vehicle with them, jot down the registration number.

"We are having some real success in preventing burglary and arresting burglars. It is a type of crime where information from the public can be a big help."
