Another double from Burke

4:42pm Tuesday 27th May 2008

STEVE Burke managed back-to-back wins again this week.

On Tuesday night he repeated his tactic of riding away from the whole field on the final lap of the second round of the TLI Road Race series at Lower Withington to give him a 100 per cent record in the series.

The following evening he just got the better of up-and-coming junior Mike Cuming to maintain his 100 per cent record in the Wheelers' 10-mile Time Trial competition.

Steve recorded 21.33, his fastest time of the year, to beat Cuming by just 11 seconds. Adam Bailey was third in 22.02, just ahead of Andy Patterson, 22.18, and Dave Higham, 22.23. Pat Kinch and Simon Ward were the other riders inside 23 minutes and Simon Galgut took a fine eighth place in a personal best of 23.19.

Mountain bike champion Jenn O'Connor led home the ladies in a very rapid 23.55 ahead of Natalie Abbott and Claire Harbottle. Claire Logan and John Baguley had their first outing as a team in 25.02.

Other finishers were Kevin Walford, Jack Shackleton, Nick Eldred, Mark Bethall, Brian Renshaw, Carl Taylor, Dave Harbottle and Ken Barker.

Jaime Hyde continued his excellent form in road racing by taking second place - and £60 - in the Saighton RR sponsored by The Bike Factory. Held on a flattish course just south of Chester, Jaime showed nerves of steel and an impressive burst of speed to thread his way through a sprint of nearly 50 riders at the end of the race.

The Wheelers' ladies showed why they are a force to be reckoned with this season by placing three riders in the first ten in the Manchester and District LCA 25 at Chelford. Despite near gale force winds at times, Chris Higgs took second place and fastest veteran with a time of 1.04.09, Claire Logan was sixth in a personal best of 1.7.40 and Carole Sherrin was eight in another personal best of 1.11.57.
